The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) and the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) are in process of building their future fleets as well updating and extending the operating lives of their existing vessels. In doing so, they are looking to incorporate new technologies and capabilities into their assets and take advantage of innovative new approaches and capabilities in the marine sector. Both the CCG and the RCN have innovation teams that are pursuing projects and possibilities that are relevant to their platforms and mandates. Last August, the Association of British Columbia Marine Industries (ABCMI) hosted a CCG/RCN Innovation Day in Victoria with 150 participants and was deemed a very valuable event by those that attended. Now, ABCMI Is following up that initiative with an ABCMI Innovation Event that includes the CCG and RCN but also features government programs supporting companies in the pursuit of innovation and developing new technologies from idea to commercialization.
The objective of the ABCMI Event is, in part, to focus on the needs of the CCG and RCN innovation agendas as well as furthering a dialogue and understanding between the CCG/RCN and industry in pursuit of innovation and the development of new technologies that are of interest to the federal fleets. The objective is also to educate industry on the various ‘tools’ – government programs – that can be accessed in developing new technologies as well as giving industry a chance to briefly present some of the new technologies and capabilities that are being worked on and advanced – technologies that may be of relevance to the CCG and RCN innovation agendas but also are changing the horizon in the marine space.
