Rebuilding the Shipbuilding Industry:
Investing in Local to Impact the Global
What happens when you invest in British Columbia’s shipbuilding and manufacturing? You empower communities, economies and residents of British Columbia to be the national leader of Canada’s shipbuilding and marine suppliers. Seaspan ULC is a part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) which is rebuilding the shipbuilding industry in Canada with its “pan-Canadian marine supply chain”, representing $2.1 billion in contracts and more than 700 Canadian businesses from coast-to-coast. BC is and will continue to be instrumental in the growth of Canadian shipbuilding and manufacturing.
Dating back to 1886, Seaspan ULC took roots in North Vancouver as a tugboat company CH Cates and Sons, which hauled stone from quarries at Gibsons and Squamish[1]. Through various acquisitions and mergers, Seaspan ULC grew into three distinct entities across the province of BC: Seaspan Shipyards, Seaspan Marine and Seaspan Ferries.

Seaspan Shipyards provides “shipbuilding and ship repair services across three locations: Vancouver Shipyards, Vancouver Drydock and Victoria Shipyards.” Currently Seaspan Shipyards is building two Joint Support Ships for the Royal Canadian Navy, an Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel for the Canadian Coast Guard and is in the design phase for a Polar Icebreaker and 16 Multi-Purpose Vessels, also for the Coast Guard. Seaspan’s current book of work stretches out into the 2030s.
Seaspan Marine is the “largest and most diverse tug and barge company on Canada’s west coast” with a host of services including “ship docking, tanker escort and emergency towing, and tug and barge”. The last entity of Seaspan ULC is Seaspan Ferries which serves the Vancouver Island supply chain with a reliable customer-focused commercial ferry service, with over 10 scheduled daily departures a day.
With over 4,000 employees and extending service to clients in BC, Canada and the global market, Seaspan incorporates diverse initiatives both on and offshore. Seaspan recently launched the HaiSea Marine, a joint venture majority owned by the Haisla Nation in partnership with Seaspan which includes “three fully electric tugs, the world’s first fully electric harbour tug boats.” This majority owned partnership by the Haisla Nation includes the Haisla, Gitxaala and the Gitga’at Nations and will continue the mission to meet the ever-growing need to respond actively to climate change. Along with their diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, Seaspan is responding to the most crucial parts of the economy: people.

Seaspan ULC has this advice for other marine businesses seeking to expand their business. “Opportunities for growth within BC’s marine industry are wide-ranging. From manufacturing to clean energy solutions, and innovation to support modern shipbuilding and fleet maintenance, there are many opportunities on and offshore. Look for ways to expand on your organization’s core offerings or products because there could be opportunities to move into a new space that didn’t exist even a decade ago, or leverage technology to find a solution to a decades-old problem.” Investing in local initiatives and local people is truly reflected in the work of Seaspan ULC and in their ongoing operations to bring shipbuilding and manufacturing back to Canada.
We are truly thankful for the collaborative and equity seeking opportunities Seaspan ULC is offering our members and the those within BC and across the globe. When asked to reflect on their partnership with ABCMI, they said this: “Seaspan is pleased to be a part of ABCMI and have the opportunity to connect with like-minded and inspiring marine organizations within BC. Being involved with ABCMI has allowed Seaspan to grow our pan-Canadian supply chain to support our book of work for the Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Coast Guard.”
